It isn't just the age, it is also the wood that is used. My violin was hand made by a second generation crafter who used the wood his father had set aside and never used.

Mine is made from spruce and wavy maple. I had been trying out other violins he had made, but as soon as I played the one my parents bought me, I knew it was the one whose sound resonated with me. I have had it for over 30 years now.

I have an 200 years old violin. And as I play on it since I'm 13, I can tell that it's not only the sound, but also the story behind it: this instrument survived wars, this instrument was played and made by people who leaved hearth now that I am writing. For me, that's what makes the soul of the violin's sound. So full of life, so nostalgic because so filled with old memories and melodies. While I'm playing, I always have a thought for the hands it has been into. I'll be glad if my violin was sold again when I die, and played by someone again.

I had a 250 year old violin that was a Stradivarius knockoff from Czechoslovakia as my first violin. I got it for $100. My violin teacher was astounded by the quality and it made a warm, rich and dark tone like the one here. It broke irreparably a couple years after getting it, but it was wonderful. I still have it but its in pieces.

Not doubting that the 200 year old one sounds better (because of it being thoroughly broken in over the years, and potentially countless restorations), but for fairness sakes in comparison, those two samples were completely uncontrolled in variables. The second’s dynamics were increased (making it sound fuller), tempo increased (making the piece itself sound more impressive), the piano playing harmony had more bass (to the untrained ear who cannot distinguish performing media in a piece, it would blend together and overall sound like a fuller sound), it was played significantly more expressively with more expressive techniques such as vibrato (making it sound more impressive, expressive and full). None of these attributes are inherent to the violin itself, all changed by the player trying to make the 200 year old one sound more “sophisticated” (as other commenters have put it) compared to the 10 year old one.

We have a handed down 3/4 violin (belonged to my grandmother, and wasn't new when she got it) which is about 100 years old. My daughter is learning to play it. It's definitely different to a modern violin, less sharp, not as loud. Sadly most see it as something negative, but played well, it has a mysterious ring to it, and we love it for that.

The 10 year old has an almost tinny, hollow sound on the note pull. Like a speaker in a can. The 200 year old fills that sound and makes it more boisterous and complete, like rushing wind through trees.

The first is like cheddar cheese, it talks and gets its message across. The second one is like an evening on a french boucany on the coast overlooking the town and the sunset over the beach and a party inside with a more relaxed feeling outside. Its smooth and flowing. There is added bass to the second recording, that is the big difference. However, age doesn’t matter. Used materials and minor differences in shape and volume are the major differences in sound.

I think it partly has to do with the varnish. As varnish ages microscopic cracks form and give the sound more area to vibrate so the sound becomes richer as the violin ages.

Listening through the speakers in my car I can definitely hear a difference. The 200 year old violin has a broader sounding spectrum, plus it’s warmth is more apparent. The 10 year old violin is a bit brighter in tone, more responsive but without that full bodied sound of the vintage. I love how unique instruments are and how the different materials used like the various woods and their age effects how they sound. They’re all unique. Incredible. If I didn’t have to work a job to pay my bills and I had my days free I’d spend a lot of the time learning and playing lots of different instruments!

The first feels like running a hand over planed and sanded wood, however, the second is planed, sanded, oiled, and polished with countless coats of beeswax. The low notes are richer, the high notes are shinier and sweeter, and the mellow mid tones are warmer. (I never got much further than sawing branches off a tree that a cat was stuck in with my violin lessons.)

The reason why voilins sound different is related to the wood and its density.

The older ones just happen to be made with slow growing hardwoods that were made to grow even slower due to the general environmental conditions from a few hundred years ago.

That's the reason why the older voilins are so desirable.

If youre lucky enough to get your hands on some quality wood, the sound can still be reproduced now.?
