In order for this to work properly, you need to ensure your speakers or headphones have proper frequency response range. FYI the 17.4kHz worked on my Bose headphones but not on my ipod earphones (which report a response range of 20Hz-20kHz).

wow gee wow huh

so i felt skeptical after i couldn't hear the last tone, even with high-quality headphones. decided to go in and generate a 17.4 khz tone myself without going through youtube, and i could hear it loud and clear, even without the headphones.

then, just to make sure, i ripped the audio and looked at it through audacity. there is no 17.4 khz tone at all present in the video.

ironically, the ones who can hear it might be the ones that need their heads checked ;)

I am 56 and could hear all of them but the last one. They got fainter and fainter, but definitely still audible. I have sensory processing issues; sound being one of the things I am hypersensitive to. Since I see much younger people saying they can't hear the last one either, I may or may not be able to hear the last one IRL, too.

Top tip:
You can avoid the obvious clicks by cutting your samples in a wave editor at the zero point of the waveform. The bit right in the middle. If you do the that the test is complete. As it stands now a lot of people might hear the click and think they can hear the frequency.

17.4Hz is actually slightly above the average hearing range for a human. My cats could hear it just fine, but all I heard was a faint buzz.

not all speakers produce full range sound or sounds within ranges at a noticeable volume levels.
If you have a cellphone, you likely don't have sound much below 500hz or above 18khz and the perceived sound steeply slopes off in each direction around 2khz...the center of the average human voice.

You can't hear the last two no matter how old or young you are because they are at 15 kHz and 17.4 kHz. YouTube downsamples all audio to a sample rate of 22.05 kHz. According to the NyquistShannon sampling theorem, the highest frequency that can be reproduced is half the sample rate, in this case 11.025 kHz. The 12 kHz tone was simply reduced to 11.025 kHz and the other ones were so high in frequency they were simply cut off by the lowpass filter.

Yeah the last one is turned down. I watched the volume control which indicates the amplitude of the sound and it was half that of the other three. I can hear it when my volume is turned up to about 20 % and can hear the others perfectly fine at 16 %.

The last 2 do exist, at first I thought I couldn't hear them and they weren't there, but by turning up my speakers fully I heard a very faint ringing sound. They are quite quick as well, not long, drawn out rings. Listen carefully.

You can't hear the last few because the audio compression when converting the file to .FLV isn't sensitive enough for the higher frequencies. The people that say they hear it are probably just hearing the noise floor from their computer. I ran it through an audio processor and got no signal though. A simple tone generator can be used to do this. Using that, I can hear 17.4 khz (I'm 25), but not as well as the 19 year old I live with.

I downloaded this video file to my computer and opened it with sony soundforge the audio is blank after 15 kHz. So if you can't hear anything after that your ok! If you do hear something after that you might consider seeing a psychiatrist! ;)

I am almost 60 years old and I can hear all the way down to 15khz even with a bad head cold (tonight). The perception of its loudness is much reduced, though. Tonight I am unable to hear the mosquito level (remember head cold). I live near the sacramento river in a rice-growing region just right for breeding swarms of mosquitoes. It is often the sound of one flying nearby that alerts me to their threatening presence. I know that this is highly atypical at my age, but for whatever reason I have always had such good hearing that it has aided me in many ways besides protecting me from mosquito-borne disease.

Twenty years ago my keen hearing even aided in identifying and convicting a burglar whose footsteps in a gravelly alley across the street and maybe 30 yards away awoke me from a deep sleep. When I saw him slip between two buildings only to reappear carrying heavy items from a place of business, I called the police. I testified at trial, and he was convicted. I like to think that my super hearing made me into a crime fighter!

I am sorry that my hearing is declining due to age because it has given me great pleasure to know that one part of me may have been a little above average.

Most speakers are supposedly able to produce sounds up to 20kHz, but in reality, many can not.  The same is true with the lower frequency range.  I've found some speakers/headsets can handle the min/max and some cannot.  As others have commented, this demonstration fails to produce any kind of tone at the end, and I hear only two 'pops'.  I'm 33 and I can hear that frequency from other sources just fine.

33 and 16 thousand something is my limit. Funny story, my whole family was over for thanksgiving and my nephew played this awful 15000 khz beep. Everyone was yelling at him to turn it off, but my parents kept saying, "what are you guys talking about"? We kept playing it and they thought we were all playing a joke on them. It was a good laugh.

I'm next month 37, checkin' out all your ringtones on your website, and I hear on all my devices 21 kHz, the best result (better than on my PC speakers) is on my Huawei cellphone bought for about 1700 CZK, without connecting any stronger speaker, although the TV is playing here quite loud :-)

Old (non-LCD) televisions make that 17+ Khz noise. I'm pretty GLAD that I can't hear it as well anymore (or, more accurately, I'm not paying attention to that frequency range because it's EVERYWHERE to some extent)... when I was younger it used to drive me BANANAS. Seriously, when on the second floor of our condo and someone turned on the 36" rear-projection TV in the basement I could hear it. In thrift stores, I'd literally cover my ears in the aisle of really old TVs because it was so painful

The 2nd and 3rd tones are attenuated to about half volume, and the last one isn't there at all (just a very short click at the start and end). I'm not not talking about what I hear, I checked the actual audio waveform. Probably YouTube's audio compression discarding it.

Though, even if it were there, most headphones and speakers can't reproduce anything above 16 KHz very well.

I went to their site and I couldn't hear the 16k (it says 17000 though) sample on my poor $5 headset. I switched to my monitor speaker and I could easily hear up to 19k and I'm almost 41 years old.
I'm beginning to think it's a fault of the speakers that I could hear that. You need a proper machine to produce those sounds, I remember doing hearing tests during army draft over a decade ago and I was fine.

Im 20 and i couldnt hear 15 khz. There was just a little "click" indicating when the sound started and when it ended. Either my ears are roughly very damaged or my audio just sucks. I was playing it on tablet, with no earphones. May that be why i couldnt hear it? Im not freaking out, but i gotta admit im a bit concerned... And worried that i'll be deaf(i just hope im spelling it properly...) by the time i hit 40 :o
I do like to listen to my music loud, but not extremely loud. I used to use earphones very often when i was younger, but not anymore. Have i done some sort of boo boo to my hearing?

I'm 36 and heard the first two fine. The 3rd one, I had to turn the volume up to hear it. The last one, I turned the volume up even more, THEN heard it. What does it mean? Does it mean good hearing, even though I had to turn the volume way up??
